Beware the "Silent Killer": How to Tell When Your Dryer Cartridge Needs Replacing

Category: NewsRelease time: 2026-03-20

The air dryer cartridge is a consumable item. Over time, its ability to adsorb moisture and filter impurities gradually becomes saturated and ineffective. Failing to replace it in time is like planting a "time bomb" in your brake system. So, how can you tell when this "breathing guardian" is exhausted? The following symptoms are distress signals from your vehicle.

The most intuitive inspection method is to check the air reservoirs. At the end of each day, open the drain valve at the bottom of the reservoir. If you find a significant amount of water, or even a milky-white oil-water emulsion being discharged, this usually means the upstream dryer cartridge is saturated and can no longer effectively absorb moisture, allowing humidity to "escape" into the reservoir.

Secondly, pay attention to how the brake system feels. If you notice the brake response becoming sluggish, or the brake pedal feeling "spongy" when depressed, this could be due to water in the lines causing slower brake valve reaction. Additionally, if you hear the dryer purging ("hissing") more frequently than usual while driving, or if the exhaust sound is abnormal, it could indicate a clogged cartridge or internal valves sticking due to contaminants.

There are also external signs. For example, if the vehicle's air pressure builds up unusually slowly, or even fails to build pressure at all, it's highly likely that the desiccent beads have fractured into powder or the filter element is completely blocked by oil sludge, hindering the normal passage of compressed air. If any of the above situations are observed, it indicates the dryer cartridge is failing and needs immediate inspection and replacement. Don't let a small component cause a big problem.
