The purge valve is an integral part of the air dryer system, and its condition directly affects the performance of the filter cartridge. Replacing the cartridge offers a convenient opportunity to inspect and maintain the purge valve.
The purge valve is typically located on the bottom or side of the air dryer head. It opens briefly when the compressor unloads, releasing accumulated moisture and oil from the dryer. If the purge valve fails, the desiccant cannot regenerate, and the filter cartridge will become saturated quickly.
When removing the old cartridge, you can access the purge valve from beneath. Check for signs of leakage or damage. Common issues include a stuck open valve (causing continuous air escape) or a stuck closed valve (no purge at all). Listen for air hissing when the compressor is loaded; if you hear it, the valve may be stuck open.
Inspect the valve's rubber diaphragm or piston seal. With age and exposure to oil and water, these seals harden, crack, or swell. Remove the purge valve cover (often held by a few bolts) and examine the internal components. Replace any that show wear. Many kits include a complete purge valve rebuild kit with seals and springs.
Also clean the purge valve seat and the exhaust port. Debris or caked desiccant dust can prevent proper sealing. Use a small brush and brake cleaner to clean, being careful not to introduce dirt into the dryer head.
Check the heater and thermostat if the dryer is equipped. In cold climates, a faulty heater allows the purge valve to freeze, blocking the exhaust and causing moisture to back up. Test the heater element for continuity and the thermostat for proper switching.
Some air dryers have an integral purge valve that cannot be serviced separately; the entire dryer head must be replaced. However, many are modular. Consult the dryer manual to identify the correct repair procedure.
If the purge valve is in poor condition, replace or rebuild it at the same time as the filter cartridge. Doing so ensures the new cartridge receives proper regeneration cycles, extending its life. A new cartridge paired with a faulty purge valve will fail quickly, wasting money.
After reassembly, perform a functional test. With the engine running, let the compressor build to cut-out pressure. The purge valve should open with a distinct blast, followed by a short hiss, then close. If the blast is weak or absent, there is a restriction or the valve is not opening fully.
Listen for any continuous air leak after the purge cycle ends. If present, the valve is not seating. Re-check the seals and the spring preload. Adjust if possible or replace the valve.
Document the purge valve inspection results along with the cartridge replacement. Over time, tracking purge valve failures helps predict when they need servicing.
